The Geography Study Programme of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Almuslim University, Bireuen, Aceh, held a commemoration of Earth Day on Tuesday, 22 April 2025, at the Eastern Campus Courtyard. This year’s event embraced the theme “Thinking Globally to Keep the Earth Sustainable,” aiming to elevate collective awareness about the importance of environmental sustainability in an era of rapid societal transformation.

The event was graced by several prominent figures from Almuslim University, including the newly appointed Dean of FKIP, Dr Sari Rizki, the Head of the Geography Study Programme, Muslihin, M.Pd., as well as senior lecturers such as Dr Rahmi, M.Pd., Aisyah, M.Pd., and Dr Hariki, M.Pd. Also in attendance were Drs Faizin, M.Pd., Head of Public Relations at FKIP, members of HMJ, BEM FKIP, Himagfi, Alaska, and numerous active students from the Geography Study Programme.

In his address, Muslihin, M.Pd. highlighted the essential role students play in environmental stewardship. He encouraged students to take simple yet impactful actions, such as picking up litter, to demonstrate concern for the “geo”. “Although such actions may appear small, their impact on creating a healthy and pleasant environment is profound. Prior to this event, Geography students also planted protective trees along a two-kilometre stretch of road in Benermeriah,” he remarked.

Dr Sari Rizki, the newly appointed Dean of FKIP, extended her heartfelt appreciation for the students’ active role in sustaining the campus environment. She underlined the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a clean and green university atmosphere, stating, “A beautiful, clean, and comfortable campus environment benefits the entire academic community. Therefore, every individual must take part in ensuring its cleanliness, rather than relying solely on custodial staff.”

Arizal Mahdi, Chairman of Relawan Peduli Rakyat Lintas Batas (Volunteers Caring for the People Across Borders), also offered commendation for the initiative. He expressed, “This Earth Day commemoration is a commendable effort. I sincerely appreciate the students of Almuslim University, especially those in the Geography Programme, for their commitment to environmental preservation. The spirit of safeguarding the Earth and minimising environmental degradation must be continuously nurtured—on campus and beyond.”

Furthermore, Dr Sari Rizki urged student organisations such as BEM, HMJ, Himagfi, and Alaska to foster collaboration with other faculties and local communities in preserving the cleanliness of the campus. One particular area of concern she addressed was the importance of clearing blocked drainage channels to prevent flooding and related hazards.

As part of the Earth Day commemoration, students of the Geography Study Programme initiated a “One Day Without Rubbish” campaign. The activity included cleaning the Eastern Campus Courtyard, roadways leading to the university, and adjacent areas. The initiative was designed to cultivate environmentally conscious habits and encourage widespread participation in caring for shared spaces—both within and beyond the campus grounds.

As caretakers of the Earth, today’s students are tomorrow’s environmental stewards. Through meaningful events such as this, the Geography Study Programme not only imparts academic knowledge but also instils a deep, lasting sense of ecological responsibility. The hope is that these efforts will spark greater action and awareness, inspiring future generations to continue building a sustainable and harmonious relationship with nature.
